Good Morning

Ladies and Gentlemen Let’s thank Allah for His mercy and blessing, so that we can meet here to have this lovely program. Peace be upon our prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companion.

In this delight occasion, I would like to talk about the problem of our national education. I have one big question for you: Have the result of education in Indonesia been satisfactory?

The answer is NOT YET You know, the result of our education is supposed to create students who afraid and get close to Allah or Taqwa and have high quality in mastering science and technology. However, what a pity when we see the reality that the result is nothing except the students mastering in juvenile delinquency, such as: making a date, student fighting, drug abuse, and many others.

Only a few number of them who are serious in their study. We can count by fingers of our friends who are smart and get close to Allah. Then, why does this condition happen?

These problems appear because many kinds of aspects: The first thing is about the educational system in Indonesia. We admit or not, our education tends to imitate the western countries that separate between the religious lesson and the worldly affairs. It is also a pity that the religious lesson only gets a small amount of time in our schedule, only two hours a week.

The second one is that the education today is supposed like a business. The educational staff prefer think how to get the financial profit to think the quality of the output. The teachers have also less responsibility in this problem. Most of the teachers only transfer the science and knowledge, but take a little attention to the spiritual and personality of the students. The other aspect contribute to the problem is that the family and the environment have lack attention to the students. Today, there are many mothers busy working and ignore to the children.

The environments are also permissive to some juvenile delinquency. Dear friend, we must change the problem; otherwise we will become the next victim. We must think over the cause of the problems and overcome these before it gets worse. The governments should rethink about the educational system and give more portions to religious and personality lesson.

The teachers, family and society should be more serious in teaching and paying attention to the students or to the young generations.

This afternoon, I was in a hurry. I had to get Lawang before East Java Bank closed. Indeed, my school is in Wagir, a place that so far from Lawang. It’s about 40 km. I was a bit worried coz it was almost 12 o’clock while East Java bank closed at 2.00 pm. It take 2 up to 2.5 hours to reach Lawang using public transportation. I was continuously grumbling why we are always late to get the information. Today we get the information and tomorrow is the due time.

Besides, Tomorrow is Saturday, and the bank is closed. Moreover, why should we legalize the bank account? I think it is impossible for a person to submit the wrong bank account because she or he will be unlucky. Uughh.. Nothing to loose to fulfill the requirements!
Actually, since 10 am, I have negotiated my husband to take me home, but he said that he still has many works to do. I was a little bit annoyed that he blamed me why I don’t bring the bank account book with me. I replied what for we bring our blank bank account everywhere? It was also reluctant to ask for a help to my friend to take me to the road where the public transportation is available. I was just to and fro until Bu Puji took his motorcycle to go home. I asked for a lift. It was much better than walking along the hill and valley. If I complaint about the distance of the school from the street, my husband must blame me again why I cannot ride a motorcycle.

I chose the public transportation that has been many passengers inside so that it would not stop again and again. But, I was unlucky that the public transportation still stopped again and again at every block, just to wait uncertain passengers. At 12.30 the public transportation just reached Klojen and stopped for a long time that made me sleepy. Unintentionally, I dropped the helmed from my fingers. Braakkkk! Everyone was shocked!
“Hi Ms! Don’t drop your helm as you will! “Cried the driver staring at me!
I just kept silent, I was too lazy to deny
Where will you get off? Arjosari, isn’t it?
“Yes, sir” I replied calmly
Where??? In Arjosari, isn’t it? He cried more loudly
“Yesssss, sirrrr! I replied loudly and annoyed too!

Wait for a minute. Maybe there will be one or two more passengers. If you are in hurry please take a cab! How? Will I get a cab for You? Grumbled the driver.

I just keep silent. I was too reluctant to say a word. But, by the chance I saw a cab passed behind the public transportation.
“Yes, sir. I’ll take a cab anyway! I got off and gave 2500 rupiahs to the driver.
However, the cab has passed by. I was late to catch it. I saw the public transportation I took was gone in high speed. He was angry maybe because of my unexpected reply.

I considered the suggest of Mr. Driver. It’s better for me to take a cab, otherwise I would be late. But, I didn’t want to wait any longer or to phone the cab also took time. So, I decided to take another public transportation.

The second driver seemed to know that I was in a hurry, so he drove the car in high speed too. Not more than ten minute later we had reached Arjosari and hurriedly I took the public transportation to Lawang, LA. In this car, I met again a girl that took the same public transportation, in the first car. She told me that the driver was so rude to the passengers. There was a passenger that wanted to get off but the driver didn’t want to stop the car. And also, he threw the money from us. We were still lucky that we can get off safely!

I told her that actually I was unintentionally dropping the helmed. I thought the driver wanted to make a joke but his words were not really sound good. So I decided to take another public transportation!

OOo.. I think you will really take a cab! She said.

If I take a cab, I’ll not still be here now! I replied

Text report ini bisa kita jumpai di kamus dan ensiklopedia. Ciri-ciri yang khas dari teks report adalah adalah tidak terdapatnya personal pronoun I, My, Our seperti yang lazim kita temui di teks deskriptif.

PENGUIN

There are seventeen types of penguins. They can be between forty centimeters to more than one meter tall. They all live in south part of the world. In winter, they swim a long way to find warmer water. In spring, many penguins come together in the beaches of Antarctica. The female penguins have one or two eggs. They put their eggs on the ground and sit there to keep them warm. But, she doesn’t sit all the time because she can move with one egg between her legs. When the female penguin is sitting on the eggs, the male penguin brings her food. He also does this when the baby penguins are born.

Banyak buku Teks dan LKS (Lembar Kerja Siswa) yang kurang tepat dalam memberikan contoh teks deskriptif. Kebanyakan mereka memberikan contoh teks report ketika membahas teks deskriptif. Bahkan, waktu saya ikut pelatihan ToT (Training of Trainer) KBK Bahasa Inggris Tingkat Nasional (2004) pun yang membuat modul tentang Teks deskriptif keliru dalam memberikan contoh. Dan alhamdulillah kekeliruan itu telah dijelaskan oleh pembuat modul report. Teks descriptive and report memang sama sama memberi gambaran tentang sesuatu (describing things) tetapi ada perbedaan yang penting diantara keduanya.

Teks descriptif memberi gambaran suatu benda, hewan, atau tempat yang spesifik yang berbeda dengan yang lainnya walaupun jenisnya sama, misal: my cat, my sweet home, dll. Tapi teks report adalah menggambarkan atau menjelaskan tentang ciri ciri objek secara umum atau general yang sifat-sifat atau ciri-cirinya itu berlaku secara umum di berbagai tempat. Contoh: Whale, Cat, elephant. Text report ini bisa kita jumpai di kamus dan ensiklopedia. Ciri-ciri yang khas dari teks report adalah adalah tidak terdapatnya personal pronoun I, My, Our seperti yang lazim kita temui di teks deskriptif.

KANGAROO

A kangaroo is an animal found only in Australia, although it has a smaller relatives called wallaby, which lives on the Australian islands of Tasmania and also in New Guinea. The large types of kangaroo are the great grey kangaroos and the red ones.

Kangaroo eats grass and plant. It has short front legs. However, its back legs are very long and strong. These it uses for sitting and jumping. Kangaroo has been known to make forward jumps of over eight meters and leaps across the fence more than three meters high. It can also run at speed of 45 kilometers per hour.

MY TERRIBLE WEEK

I was hospitalized for a week because of malaria last month. At first, I had headache, aching muscles, stomachache, and weakness. Then, I got fever, chills, loss of appetite and vomitting. I thought that I got cold, but the doctor said that I had malaria. I was afraid because people suffered from malaria can develope severe complications and die. The doctor and the nurse tried to calm me down. They said that malaria could be cured. The doctor then gave me medicine. After a week in the hospital, the doctor said that I could go home.

When I was walking home from school yesterday, I saw an accident. A car hit a motorcycle from behind. The driver could not control his car because he drove very fast.
The car didn’t stop after the accident. It even ran faster and disappeared. The traffic was not so crowded. No one came to help the motorcycle’s rider. He was injured badly. I was so scared at that time.
Thaen, I called the police and tried to find help for the victim. Soon, the police came. The police asked me some questions. I told them what happened. After that I went home because it was already dark.
It was really tragic.

Then, I got out of the bed quickly and went to look out of the window. As I looked, I saw the house opposite began to fall sideways. Then I realized what was happening. I put on my dressing gown hurriedly and rushed out into the garden.

I was alone in the house, my wife and children had gone to visit my mother in law.

For three or four minutes, I heard a terrible noise of walls falling down, and people screaming, and I saw clouds of dust in the air. Then the trembling stopped.

Here is the example:

Orientation: I was driving along to the coast road when the car suddenly lurched to one side.
Series of events:

Event 1 : At first, I thought a tire had gone
Event 2 :Then, I saw telegraph phones collapsing like math sticks.
Event 3 : The rocks came tumbling across the road and I had to abandon the car
Re-orientation : When I got back to the town, well, as I said, there wasn’t much left

SEND ME A CARD

Last Summer, I went to Italy. I visited museum and sat in the public garden. Then, a friendly waiter lent me a book. I read a few lines but I did not understand a word. Everyday, I thought about poscard. My holidays passed quickly but I did not send any card to my friends. On the last day, I made a big decision. I got up early and bought thirty seven cards.
